Family Friendly

A supportive, social club where everyone feels at home - sharing adventures, laughter, and lifelong memories.

A Club for Everyone.

At Lowestoft & District Canoe Club, we’re more than just a paddle-sport club — we’re a community.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll find an atmosphere that’s relaxed, welcoming, and above all, family-focused. Whether you're a young paddler trying kayaking for the first time, a parent joining your child on the water, or a grandparent rediscovering the joy of being out in nature - there’s a place for you here.

We believe paddling should be something everyone can enjoy, regardless of age, experience, or ability. That’s why we’ve created a space where entire families can learn, grow, and paddle together - side by side.

Learn, Paddle & Grow.

Whether you're brand new to paddling or looking to sharpen your technique, our club offers a welcoming space to learn and progress. From mastering basic strokes & earning recognised awards to advanced skills like rescue techniques and river reading, there's always something new to try.

At our club, paddling is anything but one-size-fits-all. Alongside classic kayaking, you can explore a wide range of craft - from sleek sea kayaks built for adventure to stand-up paddleboards that offer a fresh perspective. For those after a bit more speed, our racing kayaks provide a real thrill. And if you're up for something truly unique you can try the Mega SUP.

Canoeing is gentle on the joints but great for the body. It improves core strength, balance, and cardiovascular health — all while having fun. It’s a low-impact way to stay active, both mentally and physically.

Life at Your Club

From peaceful paddles to lively BBQs and group adventures, here’s a glimpse of what it’s like to be part of our club — on and off the water.
  • Build Real Skills

While paddling is great fun, it's also a serious skill — and our club offers plenty of opportunities to grow. Members can work through nationally recognised qualifications, such as the Paddle UK (formerly British Canoeing) awards, gaining confidence in everything from safety and rescue to advanced techniques.

With guidance from experienced instructors, you’ll be supported at every stage, whether you're starting out or aiming for higher-level certification.
  • Become a Leader

Many of our current instructors began their journeys right here at the club, starting as complete beginners before working their way up through the skills and leadership pathways. As your confidence and experience grow, so too can your role - with the opportunity to train as a paddle sport leader or qualified instructor.

You’ll gain nationally recognised credentials, but also the chance to support and inspire others just as you were supported. It’s a rewarding path that deepens your knowledge, builds your confidence, and allows you to give back to the community while sharing the joy of life on the water.
  • Paddling Into Adventure

At the club, we believe in giving members the chance to experience a wide variety of paddling environments — from calm waters to exciting moving water adventures. Beginners often get their first taste of white water at Cardington, a friendly and accessible artificial course that builds confidence and control in a safe setting.

As paddlers grow in skill and ambition, they can take on more challenging venues like the River Nene or even test themselves at the Lee Valley White Water Centre, home of the 2012 Olympic course. These trips offer the chance to develop advanced techniques, explore new places, and paddle as part of a supportive and adventurous team.
  • Paddle. Eat. Repeat.

Club life doesn’t end when the paddling stops. After evening sessions, it’s not uncommon to gather for a BBQ, with Joe proudly earning his title as the club’s BBQ king. These moments are a great way to unwind, share stories, and build friendships off the water.

Beyond official activities, members often organise their own socials - from beach parties and bowling nights to spontaneous “mates paddles” that run outside of the main club calendar. It’s all part of the welcoming, down-to-earth atmosphere that makes the club feel like a second home.
  • The Beauty of the Broads

One of the club’s greatest assets is its location - right on the edge of the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, a unique network of rivers and lakes brimming with natural beauty. Paddling here is a chance to quietly explore reed-lined channels, open broads, and hidden inlets teeming with life.

From kingfishers and herons to otters and dragonflies, the Broads are full of wildlife, and no two paddles are ever quite the same. It’s a peaceful, immersive experience that connects you with nature and helps you truly appreciate the environment around you.
  • Just for the Fun of it

Not every paddle has to be about progress, goals, or events - sometimes it's just about having a laugh, floating with friends, or drifting into golden-hour light with no plan at all. Whether you're chasing splashes, trying to stand up in a kayak (don't tell the instructors!), following the stars on a night paddle or watching the sunset with a brew on the bank at the Commodore, fun is always at the heart of what we do.

There’s space for serious development, but there’s just as much space for messing about on the water - and that’s exactly how it should be.

Get involved, getting wet is optional*
